Getting Started: Setting Up Your Journal on ScholarJMS
Setting up a journal on ScholarJMS takes under 30 minutes. This guide walks you through account creation, journal profile configuration, domain connection, and first-issue setup so your editorial workflow is ready to receive submissions on day one.
What You Will Need
Before you start, have the following ready: your journal name and ISSN (if already assigned), a corresponding editor email address, and the domain or subdomain where the journal website will live. ScholarJMS can also provision a free subdomain (yourjournal.scholarjms.com) if you do not yet have a custom domain.
Step 1 — Create Your Publisher Account
Visit scholarjms.com/start-journal and complete the publisher registration form. You will receive a confirmation email within a few minutes. Click the verification link to activate your account and access the owner dashboard.
Note: One ScholarJMS publisher account can manage multiple journals. You do not need a separate account per journal.
Step 2 — Create Your Journal
From the owner dashboard, click New Journal. Fill in the journal profile:
Basic Information
Journal title, abbreviation, ISSN (print and/or electronic), subject area, and language of publication.
Publisher Details
Publisher name, country, contact email, and institutional affiliation (if applicable).
Open Access Settings
Whether the journal is fully open access, hybrid, or subscription-based. This affects how ScholarJMS handles APC flows and how the journal appears in the public directory.
Peer Review Type
Single-blind, double-blind, or transparent (open) review. This can be changed later without affecting existing submissions.
Step 3 — Configure Your Domain
ScholarJMS hosts the journal website. You can use:
Custom Domain (Recommended)
Point a CNAME record from your domain (e.g., journal.youruniversity.edu) to hosting.scholarjms.com. DNS propagation takes 15–60 minutes.
ScholarJMS Subdomain
We provision a free subdomain instantly. No DNS changes required. Useful for testing before your domain is ready.
SSL certificates are provisioned automatically via Let's Encrypt within minutes of domain verification.
Step 4 — Invite Your Editorial Team
Go to Journal Settings → Team Members and invite editors by email. Available roles:
Editor-in-Chief
Full editorial control and final accept/reject decisions
Associate Editor
Manages assigned submissions and reviewers
Section Editor
Handles a specific discipline or section of the journal
Step 5 — Create Your First Issue
Navigate to Issues → New Issue. Set the volume, issue number, and publication date. The issue remains in draft status until you publish it — at which point it becomes visible on the journal website and triggers DOI metadata submission to CrossRef (if DOI is enabled).
