Setting Up CrossRef DOI Registration on ScholarJMS

ScholarJMS automates CrossRef DOI registration. Once your CrossRef member credentials are entered, DOIs are assigned at article publication and metadata is deposited to CrossRef automatically — no manual XML export required.

What You Need First

To register DOIs through ScholarJMS you must be a CrossRef member. CrossRef membership requires a one-time fee plus a per-DOI fee (current rates at crossref.org/fees). If your institution already has a CrossRef account, obtain the member login and password from your institutional DOI administrator before proceeding.

Step 1 — Enter CrossRef Credentials

In ScholarJMS, go to Journal Settings → Integrations → CrossRef DOI. Enter:

  • CrossRef Login: Your CrossRef member login (email or username)
  • CrossRef Password: Your CrossRef member password
  • DOI Prefix: Your assigned prefix (e.g., 10.12345)
  • Journal ISSN: Used to build the DOI suffix; must match your CrossRef registration

Security: Credentials are stored encrypted. Never share your CrossRef password; ScholarJMS uses it only to deposit metadata on your behalf.

Step 2 — Configure DOI Format

Set the DOI suffix pattern under DOI Format. ScholarJMS supports:

Year + Article ID

10.12345/2026.001

Journal Abbr + Volume + Page

10.12345/jname.v1i1.001

Choose a format before your first DOI deposit — changing it later may create inconsistencies in CrossRef records. Contact ScholarJMS support if you need a custom suffix pattern.

Step 3 — Publish an Article to Test

Publish a test article (or a real accepted article) in ScholarJMS. Upon publication:

  1. ScholarJMS generates a CrossRef-compliant XML deposit file
  2. The file is submitted to CrossRef's deposit endpoint automatically
  3. CrossRef responds with a deposit ID and status (usually resolves in 5–30 minutes)
  4. The article DOI becomes clickable and resolves to the journal article page

You can view deposit status under DOI Management → Deposit Log. Failed deposits are retried automatically and flagged for your review.

Retroactive DOI Registration

If you have previously published articles without DOIs, ScholarJMS can batch-register them. Go to DOI Management → Bulk Register, select the articles, review the generated metadata, and submit the batch deposit. Each deposit costs one CrossRef DOI fee at your membership rate.

CrossRef Membership

ScholarJMS can assist you with the CrossRef membership application process as part of journal onboarding. Contact scholarjms@gmail.com for guidance.
